TheDesignAgent vs Claude Design: designing before the build, reviewing during it

Claude Design and TheDesignAgent cover different moments in building a product. Claude Design is where you design before you build: you work with Claude on a canvas to make prototypes, wireframes, slides and one-pagers in your brand, then hand the result to Claude Code. TheDesignAgent works inside the build: every time your coding agent builds a screen, it gets a brief first and a scored UX and visual review after, grounded in your project's users and their jobs.

What Claude Design is

Anthropic launched Claude Design as an Anthropic Labs research preview on April 17, 2026. It's available on Claude's Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans (Enterprise admins turn it on), and it counts toward your normal Claude usage.

• It designs with you: prototypes, wireframes, slides and one-pagers, with inline comments, direct edits on the canvas and adjustment sliders.
• It uses your brand: it imports a design system from a GitHub repo, design files or a local codebase.
• It exports and hands off: to PDF, PPTX, HTML, Canva, Figma or Vercel, or as a bundle for Claude Code (or another coding agent) with the design files, the conversation and a README.

What TheDesignAgent is

A design agent in your coding agent's loop, connected over MCP to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Grok Build and other clients.

• Before each screen: Discover gives the agent a brief: the user's job, the heuristics and patterns that apply, your design tokens.
• After each screen: Ux scores job fit, UX heuristics, cognitive load and pattern conformance; Visual scores brand, hierarchy and aesthetics from a real screenshot. Each returns findings for the agent to fix.
• Across builds: a project memory every agent on the repo shares, so each review shapes the next brief.

The difference that matters

• When it runs. Claude Design: when you sit down to design something, in claude.ai. TheDesignAgent: automatically, on every screen the coding agent builds, inside the agent.
• What it produces. Claude Design: designs and documents you shape by hand. TheDesignAgent: briefs, scores and findings the agent acts on.
• Who drives it. Claude Design: you, on a canvas. TheDesignAgent: the coding agent, through MCP tool calls.
• Checking the built result. Anthropic's materials describe designing and handing off, not reviewing UI after a coding agent builds it. That review is the job TheDesignAgent does.

Using both

A good flow for a new product area:

1. Design the key screens in Claude Design, using your brand system.
2. Hand off to Claude Code.
3. As Claude Code builds those screens, and the dozens of smaller screens nobody designed, TheDesignAgent briefs each one and reviews the result against the user's job.
4. Claude Code fixes what the reviews flag before you open the pull request.
